TemporalmandibularJoint Disorders (TMJ)
The temporalmandibular joint (TMJ) is located between the lower jaw and the temporal bone of your skull. Infections, trauma, and lesions can cause TMJ disorders. TMJ disorders are more common in women than men. Disorders are usually caused by grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw.

Symptoms of TMJ disorder are usually pain around your ears without drainage or fever, clicking and or grinding of your jaw when chewing or talking. Even opening your mouth may be painful or impossible.

TMJ disorders are usually treated by a dentist who specializes in TMJ disorders or an Oralmaxillofacial surgeon. Treatment consists of a possible change in diet, a retainer or a bite plate may be made for you so that you are unable to bite down completely so you are unable to clench your jaw and grind your teeth. Surgery may be needed in extreme cases. Muscle relaxants or pain medicine may be given for the pain.
