Food Allergy & Cross-Reactivity
Food allergies can cause severe reactions. Hives, shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling of the throat causing difficulty breathing, shock, and death have been reported from food allergies.

If you have experienced a rash, shortness of breath, wheezing, swelling, or difficulty breathing after eating certain foods, you should remove them from your diet.

People have experienced severe symptoms after exposure to only minute amounts of a food that they are allergic to. For example, a person with allergy to pepper can have a serious reaction after eating French fries cooked in oil that was previously used to cook peppered foods.

If your symptoms indicate food allergies, we can order testing to determine which foods cause allergic reactions.

Allergy shots are not given for food allergies. Elimination of foods known to cause symptoms, or foods you were found to be allergic to in testing, is the recommended treatment for food allergies.

Food Intolerances
Sometimes certain foods cause heartburn, bloating, diarrhea, or other intestinal symptoms. Some of these symptoms may be due to allergies, but often they are related to other problems. For example, heartburn is often caused by regurgitation of food into the esophagus.
